After TWO false starts, Rono assumes an immediate lead.

Rono bolted through the half-mile in under 2 flat... 4:20 at the mile and 9:24 at two-miles, gaining 50 yards on John Treacy of Providence.

The chase pack at the halfway point...in the pack are true sophomores, Hunt (#215) and Salazar (#54).

Salazar, a DNF (Cramps) in this race last year, would lead the Ducks to the team title.

'78 NCAA's (50 sec in)- Salazar (#345), Chapa (#338) and Rono (#349) lead early with race temperatures a breezy 19 degrees.

Salazar opened up a 60-yard gap in the uphill fifth mile. He held on to his lead to win by three seconds (29:30).

Rono fails to win a third straight individual crown and finished as a straggler, fifth-from-last, 237th (34:10).

'79 NCAA's - Salazar leads Rono in a break away from the rest of the field before three miles (1M-4:20, 2M-8:50, 3M-13:26)...
And actually opened up a 10 meter lead between 3 and 4M.

Rono breaks away at five miles to win his third individual NCAA cross country title by eight seconds (28:19.6).

Jim Schankel (CPSLO) leads Hunt (HS, Jr) & Terry Williams (UO) with one lap to go. They finished in that order(6M, 28:53.4- 28:55.8- 29:05.1.

SIX days later Hunt won the Coronado Half-Marathon in 68:06 breaking the CR by 2 seconds!!!! (1975).

Eric Reynolds Kinney Nat'l Champ in 82 (Above, 3rd in 81) went 14:39 @ Woodward Park., CA.
German Fernandez (Riverbank) set some course records prior to CA State meet. At Woodward Park(above) he unleashed an Incredible 14:24 (5k). Hacking 14 seconds off the previous record. (Splits: 4:28 / 9:12 / 13:55). - 2007.

Chapa (Frosh) ran: 4:01.5 mile, 8:35.8 2Mile, 13:49.6 5000m & 28:51.1 10k.

As a soph, Chapa (above) won the NCAA 5,000m.

Ran: 3:39.0 1500 & 13:25.6 5000m.

A junior, Chapa shatters the American Record of 7:42.6 held by Steve Prefontaine with a sterling 7:37.7(above pic), making him 4th fastest of all time('79). Also pulling Salazar to a 7:43.8 (4th best ever by an American).

Also: 3:38.7 1500 & 13:19.3 5000m.

May 11, 1980 - Chapa travels south to the UCLA Pepsi meet for two-miles.
