Doug's best mile was 4:20. Unwanted and unnoticed, he was never recruited.

Running the 5,000 meters for Oregon is prestigious and comes with responsibilities.

The Ducks have never lost the 5,000 meters at Hayward Field in a duel meet since Prefontaine and possibly a few meets before...

Saturday, March 31, 1979 - Oregon vs BYU - It was expected that BYU had nobody to challenge the Ducks at the distances... One unknown BYU runner decided to take on both Chapa and Salazar this afternoon - Enter Doug Padilla with a best of 14:14 (5k) from last year.

Padilla was second to Chapa in the 1500...

Chapa leads Padilla

Then ran step-for-step with Salazar and McChesney pushing them to the limit. Salazar took control during the final 200 yards, while McChesney lunged passed Padilla at the finish. (Salazar-13:41.51, McChesney-13:42.52 (PB), Padilla-13:43.0 (PB).

- - - - -April 26, 1980 - Oregon vs BYU - Featured event - 5,000 meters

The streak prevailed through, including a decade of noteworthy assaults from WSU/ Kenyans... but... It was the San Leandro, Californian who broke the string... Even though Ken Martin ran a superb race (Then, 5th fastest Duck performance). Martin tried to shake off Padilla during the final mile but Doug roared past Ken during the final 165 yards to win (above Right) in 13:36.50 (PB) to Martin's 13:37.49 (PB). ***At the time only Chapa (13:19.3), Pre (13:22.4), Paul Geis (13:23.4) and Salazar (13:26.3) have ever run faster in duel-meet season!!!
