1981 - Millrose Games 5000m

Salazar charges 4:13.8 opening mile but Suleiman Nyambui (UTEP/Tanzania), a 27yr old junior - the 5 & 10k NCAA outdoor champ and silver medalist at 5k in the Olympics at Moscow, shadowed Salazar the last third of the race, bolting past him on the penultimate lap and finishing in a collegiate indoor 5,000 meter record time, 13:20.4. Salazar finished in 13:23.1.

Salazar fades to 4th.

Flash Forward - 27 years:

Fri- 2/13/09 - Oregon senior Galen Rupp claims his first U.S. track and field record at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. -- placing second in a fast indoor 5,000 meters.

1975 -NCAA XC (above)-Terry Williams (Ore,38) is 4th .

Herb Lindsay (Michigan State, 35) was 12th. In 1976 he nails 4th at NCAA XC, only 4 seconds behind Craig Virgin... It was a breakthrough...

Lindsay stepped out from behind Virgin's shadow and vaulted into the national spotlight...
By hitting the roads.

 

May 4, 1980-At the 15-kilometer (9.3M) Midland Run in lush Far Hills, New Jersey -attracted a historic field:

among them Bill Rodgers (5), multiple WR holder Henry Rono (9) & four-time Olympic Gold medalist Lasse Viren (32).

Lindsay held off Viren and sprtinted home to beat the Finn by 40 meters in 43:54!! (4:42 pace). Viren-44:05. Lindsay took second at the AAU 5k and qualified for the Pan Am Games. In San Juan Puerto Rico, Lindsay took the silver behind Matt Centrowitz... Back on the roads, Lindsay was virtually unbeatable from 1979 to 1981. "Runner Magazine" awarded him in 1979 and 1980 with the Road Racer of the Year award.

 

Virgin, Mamede & Emiel Puttemans (BEL)

July 2, '84 - DN Galan track meet - Stockholm

Portuguese distance stars Carlos Lopes and Fernando Mamede break a 6 year old Rono WR at 10,000m (27:22.4) / Lopes led most of the way but at the start of the last lap (above) Mamede's kick 1:58, 57.5 (800, 400) sealed the then WR.

Mamede-27:13.8, Lopes-27:17.48 and thus led the world list.

American Mark Nenow was 3rd with 27:40.96.

July 2, '85 - DN Galan

Americans Bruce Bickford and Mark Nenow race to the fastest time for 10,000m for '85 (Add Ed Eyestone's Mt Sac win and the US led the world with the top 3 times!!!)

Bickford-27:37.17, Nenow-27:40.85, 3) Mamede-27:41.09, 6) Cova, 10) Steve Jones (ran 2:07.13 marathon 3 monthes later). Nenow would set his then AR the following year 27:20.85, '86.

as a prep, wins this CC race in 1978.

Nick Rose (GBR) World Junior CC Champion Steve Ovett English ("National") Junior CC Champion in '75 Steve Cram 1983 CC
International Cross Country Championships before IAAf jurisdiction in 1973 when it was renamed The World Cross Country Championships. Nick Rose won the Junior race in 23:12.4, by 5 seconds over the 4.35 mi route (7.0 km). Steve Ovett won the English ("National") Junior Cross Country Championships in '75, before winning the European Cup 800m. 23 year-old, Steve Cram was 23rd at English ("National") CC meet... Five months later, Cram won the Gold at the First World Championships in Helsinki.
