Rudy Chapa logged lots of miles at Hammond High culminating with a prep record for 10,000 meters which got him to the U.S. Olympic trials in 76. Driven by coach Dan Candiano -Chapa frequently exceeded 120 miles per week.

Salazar and Chapa - 3/19/77 -First track appearance for Oregon. It's at 10,000 meters. The two frosh lead the way: Salazar (29:03.44) Chapa (29:03.47), Clary (29:03.98), & Williams (29:07.7).

For Salazar the top 5,000m runner in HS its a debut at 10k, while Chapa is winding down dropping to 5k. At Oregon, Under Dellinger, Chapa cut his mileage running anywhere from 85-95 miles a week. He raced 800/1500 for duels.

NCAA Track Champs '77

As freshman, Salazar and Chapa didn't make an impact. Salazar wasn't a factor in the 5k as he finished 9th (14:08.4). In the 10k, Chapa was with the leaders early (4800m) but eventually finished 13th (29:42.4).

**Rono was also a non scorer - placed 10th (29:22.61).

6/3/1978 - NCAA Track Championships @ Oregon - 5,000 meters (Link to distance races).

The young soph didn't face Rono but in the field there were still 6 well-credentialed imports led by two-time winner Josh Kimeto (WSU). Chapa easily handled them all and he even waved in appreciation to the crowd 20 meters before the finish line. His winning time: 13:35.3!

It was one year ago at the University of Illinois when Rudy was a dismal 13th in the 10,000 meters.

Chapa was 9th as a frosh.

NCAA XC '79 - Chapa, a senior, was 10th. Chapa described his senior season at Oregon as "horrible," as a result of a damaged toe joint. Chapa ran a 2:11:13 marathon in 1983, but the injury ended his career prematurely.
